The city of Suzhou in eastern China lies on the Grand Canal, and its network of waterways was once the source of great wealth. For a time, Suzhou was one of China’s largest cities, and when Marco Polo arrived there he gushed over its beauty and prosperity. Many of the stone bridges you can see today in the old district were there when the famous Italian merchant visited.
