About the Organiser

Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur (NLU, Nagpur) was established by the Maharashtra State Government under the Maharashtra National Law University Act (Maharashtra Act No. VI of 2014) as the nineteenth National Law University of the country. Nestled within the suburbs of Nagpur with a world-class infrastructure on a rapidly developing campus spanning 60 acres, the University takes great pride in its pedagogy and systemic focus on all round development of each student.

The university provides a wide variety of degree programs including B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), B.A. LL.B. (Hons. in Adjudication and Justicing), B.B.A. LL.B. MNLU Nagpur is deeply involved with socio-legal issues through its specialised centres for advanced legal studies, research, and advocacy. Details About the Event

Aptly named after its connection to the ‘Orange City’, the Orange Capital Debate is envisioned as the flagship National Debate competition of the University. With the inaugural edition, the University and the Quiz, Debate and Literary Committee aim to foster and further a culture of critical thinking and intellectual sportsmanship. The Tournament would be organised from July 26-28, 2024 and the Phase-I registrations would remain open till 6th July, 2024.

The debate would be a British Parliamentary style of debate where the house is divided into two opposing factions: the proposition (or government) and the opposition. Each faction is further subdivided into opening and closing teams, with each of these four teams consisting of two speakers. The teams and their roles are named after their counterparts in the British Parliament. The Adjudicator policy is N=N. Each team must consist of 2 speakers and 1 adjudicator. Cross teams are allowed.

  • PHASE I Registration: June 18 – July 6
  • PHASE II Registration: July 7 – July 19
  • Inaugural Ceremony of The “Orange Capital Debate”: 26 July 26
  • Preliminary Rounds: 26 July
  • Preliminary rounds and Break Night: July 27
  • Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals: July 28
  • Prize Distribution followed by Valedictory Ceremony: July 28

Prizes

  • Winner: Rs. 21,000/-
  • Runner Up: Rs. 15,000/-
  • Best Speaker: Rs. 7,000/-
  • Best Adjudicator: Rs. 7,000/-

Eligibility

This competition is open to any student duly enrolled and pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate course from any university recognized by UGC. Students that have completed their Under-Graduate or Postgraduate studies from any university recognized by UGC are also eligible.

Location and Venue

The debate would be conducted in the physical mode on the campus of MNLU Nagpur.

Registration Procedure

The Phase I registrations have begun from June 18, 2024. Interested students can apply as institutional teams, cross teams or as independent adjudicators through the links provided at the end of this post.

Fee Details

Registration fee inclusive of accommodation is Rs. 2200/- per participant.

Deadlines

The registration form can be filled by 11:59 pm, 6th July, 2024.
